Thanksgiving Activities for Kids: Easy Ideas With Free Printables

October 20, 2026 · 6 min read

Thanksgiving activities for kids do two jobs at once: they keep little hands busy while dinner gets ready, and they give the whole family a reason to talk about what they are thankful for. In 2026, Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, so there are still a few weeks to get a small stack of printables ready.

Below are low-prep ideas for kids ages 3 to 8. Most need only paper, a pencil, and crayons. Everything marked "printable" is free on SparkleCraftClub.

Quiet-time Thanksgiving activities (before guests arrive)

The hour before guests arrive is when kids tend to get wiggly and adults tend to get stressed. A short basket of quiet activities near the kitchen helps a lot.

  • Word search. Older kids (about 6 to 8) enjoy hunting for words like TURKEY, PIE, and FEAST. Start with a small grid and a word bank. The Thanksgiving Word Search & Maze Activity Pack has an easy 8x8 puzzle and a bigger harvest one, with answer keys.
  • Mazes. A "help the turkey find the pie" maze is a friendly way to practice pencil control. Let kids try with a finger first, then a pencil.
  • Count the feathers. For ages 3 to 5, counting feathers on a turkey and circling the matching number turns early math into a game.
  • Dot-and-dash tracing. Tracing straight lines, zigzags, and waves builds the hand control kids use later for writing letters.

Gratitude activities kids actually enjoy

Asking a five-year-old "What are you thankful for?" at the table can get you a long silence, or just "my dog." Giving kids something to draw or color first usually makes the conversation easier.

  • A thankful turkey page. Kids write or draw one thing they are thankful for in each feather. Younger kids can dictate while you write.
  • A November gratitude tracker. One small circle per day, colored in after the family shares something. The pack above includes a 30-day tracker you can stick on the fridge.
  • Thank-you drawings. Have each child draw a picture for a guest, a grandparent, or a neighbor, and hand it over at dinner.
  • A thankful jar. Cut paper strips, write one thankful thing per strip, and read them aloud after the meal.

Game-day and travel ideas

For many families, Thanksgiving also means football on the TV and a lot of time in the car. Both are good reasons to keep a folder of printables handy.

  • Football coloring. If the game is on, kids who are not interested in the score can color along. Our Savanna Football Team Coloring Pages feature cheerful savanna animals in football gear.
  • A clipboard kit for the car. Slide a few pages, a pencil, and a small box of crayons onto a clipboard. Kids can work on their lap without a hard table.
  • Match and paste sheets. Cut-and-paste activities like Jungle Animals: Match & Paste work well for ages 3 to 5 when you are in one place for a while. Pack safety scissors and a glue stick.

How to set up a kids' table activity station

You do not need a craft project to keep kids happy. A simple station is enough: a stack of printed pages in a folder, a cup of pencils, and a box of crayons or markers. Print a few extra copies so nobody has to wait. Put the pages out before the food arrives, and let kids pick what they want instead of assigning an activity.

If you have a mix of ages, give the youngest kids the tracing or counting pages and let the older ones take the word search. Older kids often like being asked to help a little cousin with a maze, which gives them a job too.

Tips for printing

  • Print on standard US Letter paper at 100% scale. Most pages have a margin, so they print without cutting off the edges.
  • Use "black and white" or "grayscale" mode for coloring pages to save color ink.
  • For pages kids will write on, regular copy paper is fine. For marker or paint, a slightly thicker paper works better.
  • Print the sample page first if you want to check your printer settings before printing a whole pack.

In the classroom

Teachers can use the same pages as early-finisher work, fall center activities, or a calm afternoon before the break. A word search is a quick way to practice reading and spelling words in context, and a gratitude page fits neatly into a short writing or drawing time. All SparkleCraftClub printables are free for personal and classroom use.

A simple plan for the week of Thanksgiving

  • Early in the week: print a pack and put the pages in a folder.
  • Midweek: start the gratitude tracker and color the first circle together.
  • Thanksgiving Day: set out the kids' table station and keep the car clipboard by the door.
  • The day after: finish the thankful turkey and send it to a relative who could not come.
